Introducing Capturing War
I have wanted to make this show for a long time.
Capturing War is a new series about the people who document war: the photographers, filmmakers, artists, writers, and others who stand inside extraordinary events and leave behind the images and records through which the rest of us come to understand them.
I have spent much of my own life working with the things they left behind. Photographs. Film. Letters. Documents. Fragments of lives preserved because someone thought to look, record, write, or press the shutter.
This series is about turning the lens around.
For the first episode, I am joined by my friends and co-hosts Brennan Gauthier and Dan Kubasch to explore the life and work of Coast Guard combat photographer Robert F. Sargent, who made one of the defining photographs of D-Day, Into the Jaws of Death.
Millions of people know the photograph.
Far fewer know the man who made it.
That is exactly the kind of story I want Capturing War to tell.
Erin Faith Allen is an investigative war historian and the founder of Fortitude Research, specializing in WWII archival research, wartime reconstruction, Holocaust documentation, and the recovery of women's wartime histories. She is a leading authority on the 42nd "Rainbow" Infantry Division, inluding their liberation of Dachau concentration camp. Her family-commissioned book, One Day Over the Rhine, was published in 2026.
